Proposed changes to the Human Rights & Equal Opportunity Commission

The Australian Human Rights Commission Legislation Bill 2003 was introduced to Parliament on the 27th of March 2003 and was referred to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Legislation Committee to give all interested parties an opportunity to comment on the reforms.

The Committee's web site can be found at www.aph.gov.au/senate/committee/legcon_ctte

Information regarding the Bill can be found at www.aph.gov.au/senate/committee/legcon_ctte/human03

The Committee report was released on the 16/06/03

It passed the House of Representatives on the 27/06/2003

The Bill is yet to be introduced into the Senate. The Bill is seen as an attack on the independence of the Human Rights & Equal Opportunity Commission as it will alter how the commission performs its functions.
